Hodgkinson achieved her fastest time of one minute 54.61 seconds last year in the British capital.

The Olympic champion finished her two-lap campaign with a triumph at the women-only Athlos meet in New York on Friday night.

{The reigning Olympic gold medallist, who earned bronze at the global championships last month, excelled in an outstanding win in 1:56.53 in what was just her sixth appearance in a season affected by a muscle issue.

Compatriot and world silver medallist Georgia Bell finished second again in 1:58.33, while St Vincent's Shafiqua Maloney (one minute 58.57) claimed third.

"I haven't competed much this year so it was probably less of a struggle for me to compete and want to give it something," stated Hodgkinson.

"The environment at the event is incredible so it was extremely enjoyable."

The women-only meet filled the stadium in its second edition, bringing a party atmosphere to traditional track, with live music and Tiffany & Co. crowns replacing standard medals.

The tennis legend with 23 major titles Serena Williams, who is married to Athlos founder Alexis O., was present to award the winners with their crowns.

Last year's winners took home $60,000 (£44,603) - one of the largest prize purses in track and field.

The event also drew some of the sport's biggest names, as the Kenyan three-time Olympic gold medallist and world record holder Faith K. triumphed in the mile race, crossing the finish line in 4:17.78.

The US Brittany Brown, the 200m bronze winner from last year's Paris Olympics, secured the 100m and 200m double.
