Caelan Doris Makes Irish Selection While McCarthy Omitted
Returning head coach the Ireland coach has included captain Caelan Doris in his Ireland squad for the fall matches, however Joe McCarthy has been excluded.
Doris, absent from play since undergoing shoulder surgery in early May, has come back to provincial training, but it remains unclear whether he will be ready to play against New Zealand in the US on November 1.
Second row McCarthy, on the other hand, was not considered after not recovering from the foot injury suffered during the first British and Irish Lions match against the Wallabies in the summer.
Ulster player Cormac Izuchukwu and Munster wing Nash are also absent because of injury, while number 15 Hugo Keenan was previously excluded after undergoing a hip operation after the Lions tour.
Leinster prop Paddy McCarthy - the brother of Joe - is the only uncapped player in the 34-man squad, but Irish rugby authorities says new provincial duo Edwin Edogbo and Gleeson and previously capped western province winger Bolton will head to Chicago as "reserves".
Following facing the New Zealand at the Chicago stadium in a repeat of their previous encounter, the team will play the Brave Blossoms, the Wallabies and world title holders the Springboks in Dublin.
"It's an exciting group to the squad and there's an opportunity for the veteran players and for the newcomers on the recent tour to Georgia and Portugal," commented Farrell, who returns to national team duties after a break to lead the Lions tour to Australia.
In a mostly experienced selection, Leinster's Sam Prendergast and Munster's Jack Crowley will once again vie for the first-choice number 10 position. The number 10 jersey is still available, with the two players poised to face off for the first time in the upcoming United Rugby Championship game at Croke Park.
Ciaran Frawley is the third fly-half chosen with Farrell opting against selecting Leinster's Harry Byrne.
At number 9, the Ireland boss has picked Lions tourist Gibson-Park and Casey, who captained the national side to the summer Test victories over Georgia and the Lobos. Additionally, there is a return for Connacht's Blade, chosen to club-mate Ben Murphy.
Robbie Henshaw, Bundee Aki, Ringrose and Stuart McCloskey form an veteran group of centre choices. Osborne is another option in the midfield, but the youngster is also a frontrunner to cover for the full-back at full-back.
Outside backs Lowe, Mack Hansen, Tommy O'Brien and Stockdale are included. The winger impressed on his first Ireland outings during the summer with two tries apiece in the victories over the Lelos and Portugal.
McCarthy is the only new addition in the Irish pack. The loose-head prop has started a couple of Leinster's URC league games so far and featured in Ireland A's defeat by the English in the English city previously.
McCarthy was included in caretaker coach O'Connell's summer selection, yet did not earn a cap.
Southern province second row Thomas Ahern, who received his first two caps in those matches, is retained, while experienced Northern province second row Iain Henderson returns after sitting out the summer matches.
Jack Conan, who played in all three Lions Tests during the tour, is poised to cover for the captain if the skipper does not regain full fitness soon enough to play the All Blacks.
The national team will assemble in Dublin on Monday before flying to the US on the following day.
