2026 is Poised to Be Hailed as the Era of the Frog Game.

Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent indie games event was a delight to watch, my main revelation was a personal epiphany: I am convinced that 2026 will be the definitive year for frogs in video games.

No fewer than five of the showcased games—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—incorporate these hoppy characters. Considering a band of frogs is called an army, it seems they are staking their claim.

The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians

Croaking characters are far from new to the interactive entertainment. From the arcade classic Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have long held a special place. However, their visibility has noticeably exploded in recent times.

A cursory search for "frog game" on Steam unveils an absolute deluge of results. Granted, some of these are novelty titles, a great many are bona fide amphibian adventures.

A Data-Driven Dive

To grasp this rise, I performed a detailed review into the last half-decade of hoppy gaming on Steam. My criteria was based on clear indicators, focusing on games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.

The findings reveal an unmistakable trend: a marked rise from less than 20 titles in 2020 to almost 60 in 2025.

This dramatic growth prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The frog's elevated place in the broader culture is partially apparent elsewhere, like the revival of Frog and Toad as nostalgic figures. However, the wave in gaming looks especially strong.

Designing for a Sticky Tongue

Honestly, this is a shift I can fully endorse. Frogs offer built-in creative potential for game developers.

  • Weird Little Guys: They are perfectly suited to be designed as quirky characters that tend to be a fan favorite in any game.
  • Innovative Systems: Their elastic legs and grappling abilities lend themselves to a myriad of innovative control schemes.

Several the showcased games clearly utilize these traits. Examples include the tongue-grappling in Big Hops and the elasticity-based puzzles of Stretchmancer.

On the Cusp of a Croaking Renaissance

So, what does this mean for 2026? Given five frog games already announced before the year has officially commenced—and the chance for more—the evidence suggests for it to be the largest year for amphibian gaming.

Should these games are received positively—and based on past trends, games from this showcase have a strong track record—we may indeed be entering a true amphibian entertainment revival.
